Taking place twice a year, Galungan is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil. During three days of celebration from 29 – 31 May, guests can enjoy the colourful sight of Bali’s homes and streets adorned with the bamboo pole and young coconut leaf decorations, and the Balinese beautifully dressed in their ceremonial best.

Mekare Kare at Tenganan Village

7 & 8 June 2018

Nearby Tenganan Village is an ancient village where daily life still follows the Bali Aga (pre-Hindu) culture and traditions. The village’s annual ‘mekare kare’ is an extraordinary sight – a theatrical fight between the young men of the village, using prickly pandanus leaf whips! Each duel is staged to the intense martial sounds of ‘gamelan selonding’ music, and lasts only a few seconds, accompanied by much merriment and laughter. The attacks are warded off with tightly woven ‘ata’ vine shields.

9 June 2018

Kuningan Day on 9 June will mark the final day of Galungan celebrations. The Balinese believe that on this day the spirits of their ancestors return to heaven after having visited earth during Galungan. Kuningan means yellow and reflects the special offerings made of yellow turmeric rice given to the ancestors on this day of farewell.

The yellow rice is a symbol of man’s gratitude towards God for all the life, joy, wealth, health and prosperity given.

Saraswati Ceremony

13 October 2018

Saraswati day is the Goddess of knowledge, and wisdom. The Sanskrit word Sara means “essence” and Swa means “self.” Thus Saraswati means “the essence of the self.” Saraswati is represented in Hindu mythology as the divine consort of Lord Brahma as the Creator of the universe. Since knowledge is necessary for creation, Saraswati symbolises the creative power of Brahma. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped by all persons interested in knowledge, especially students, teachers, scholars, and scientists.

In Bali we will celebrate this event every 210 days.
