Sustainable Tourism

While creating opportunities for intimate cultural interactions for our guests with the people, cultures and natural beauty of each destination, we are dedicated to being responsible members of our host communities and treading lightly on our environment.

EarthCheck Certification
Alila adopts the EarthCheck Certification - the world’s leading programme used by the travel and tourism industry to assess environmental sustainability - which measures and regulates operational indicators such as energy, emissions, water, waste, community involvement, paper use, cleaning and pesticide use. Many of Alila's newer resorts are designed and built in accordance with strict EarthCheck standards, leading the way in sustainable tourism development. More information can be found at:

Zero Waste to Landfill
In response to the rising environmental threat to Bali’s farmlands and watercourses caused by greenhouse gases leaching from landfill sites, Alila hotels in Bali have adopted the ‘Alila Zero Waste to Landfill’ project. As part of this initiative, each hotel is investing in an Integrated Sustainable Resource Recovery Facility (iSuRRF), which will process all hotel waste onsite into higher value products and services for reuse in the hotel. In addition, a complete waste composting system is being implemented in each hotel, as well as a permaculture organic garden to provide a sustainable, self-sufficient supply of fresh produce to the hotel kitchen. Alila’s objective is to template a successful model so that it can be duplicated at Alila Hotels in all destinations. Please click here to learn more about the project as it progresses in Bali.

Holistic Environmental Vision
Respect for the environment and local communities is firmly entrenched in Alila’s vision that conservation, community and commerce can and should be integrated. Alila’s green efforts extend beyond the operational aspects of the resorts to create a positive impact on the community – economically, socially and culturally. This includes employing local people who live in the surrounding areas, developing the local workforce through skills training, using products and services from local suppliers, as well as educating our guests on local culture and traditions.

Gift to Share
Alila hotels and resorts embrace Alila’s spirit of giving back to the community through a “Gift-to-Share” programme, pledging to make donations to local causes with every booking. This community effort offers guests a no-obligation option to share the ‘Gift’ by allowing them to donate any amount they choose in support of any of the local community endeavours that are initiated by the hotel or resort.
