Alila Villas Uluwatu Sets New Eco-Luxe Standards in Bali
05 July 2009

12 July 2009, Bali - Perched on limestone cliffs in the southern coast of Bali, one hundred meters above the vast Indian Ocean, Alila Villas Uluwatu offers a horizon of glorious golden sunsets and magnificent star studded night skies. Set in this unique cliff-top setting the elegant luxury resort showcases beautifully designed villas constructed to follow environmentally sustainable design principles in tandem with the environmental and social sustainability policies of Alila Hotels & Resorts.

Designed by WOHA, an award winning design firm, Alila Villas Uluwatu’s eco-friendly framework has made it the first resort in Bali to meet the rigorous Green Globe ‘Building Planning and Design Standard’ standards. This means that the entire development was designed and built to follow an environmentally friendly fabric that will continue in Alila Villas Uluwatu’s on-going operations to ensure the resort’s environmental footprints are kept to a minimum.

Green Globe is an international benchmarking and certification program for the travel and tourism industry managed by EC3 Global, a subsidiary of the Australian based research body Sustainable Tourism Co-operative Research Centre, the world's largest source of tourism research. Its standards are based on the Agenda 21 principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio Earth Summit in 1992.

Only locally sourced building materials were used in the construction of Alila Villas Uluwatu. These include local bamboo used for the ceilings of its villas, stone from the site itself that is hand cut for the garden walls, as well as the volcanic batu chandi rock used for the roofs of each villa. Even old timbre telegraph poles and wood railway sleepers were recycled as building materials.

Local plants from the unique Bali savannah ecosystem on the Bukit are raised in a nursery on site to encourage local bird and animal life. The flat roofs of each villa are covered with locally-sourced volcanic rock, and functions as an organic insulator as well as a natural environment to encourage the growth of vegetation.

Alila Villas Uluwatu’s landscaping and architectural forms were derived from the local Bali savannah-like environment without intruding on the wild and seasonal surroundings. Using the idea of Bali’s rocky terrace fields and lush gulleys, the architects have also created terraced planes to protect cool gardens.

Having teamed up with a local waste management company to encourage waste minimization, Alila Villas Uluwatu has also placed recycling bins around the resort to facilitate the process. In an effort to reduce pollution and minimize noise, electric powered buggies are used around the property. Energy conservation is also encouraged by rerouting heat generated by air-conditioning units to heat water in the resort. There is also a recyclable grey water system that directs used water from washing machines and bathrooms to irrigate the property’s gardens.

In line with the United Nations mandate to support local economic and social progress, approximately 40 percent of the staff hired at Alila Villas Uluwatu are from the local community.

“I am extremely proud that Alila Villas Uluwatu obtained the Green Globe certification. This reinforces Alila’s commitment to preserve the natural surroundings of its properties while executing an innovative eco-friendly architectural framework which also enhances and complements the whole Alila experience,” said Sean Brennan, General Manager of Alila Villas Uluwatu.

In addition to Alila Villas Uluwatu, other Alila Hotels and Resorts properties have also achieved environmental certification. The two other Alila properties in Bali, Alila Ubud and Alila Manggis have been Green Globe operationally certified since May 2007. Prior to that, they were already recognised for their contributions to environmentally sustainable tourism. Alila Villas Hadahaa is the first resort in the Maldives to achieve the prestigious Green Globe’s ‘Building Planning and Design Standard’ Certified Status, making it the first resort in Asia to do so.
