Alila Ubud

Alila Ubud is a boutique designer property set to harmonise with Balinese culture located on the edge of the Ayung River in the village of Melinggih Kelod in Payangan. In order to provide our guests with a Balinese experience in terms of culture, environment and ambience management recognises the need to work in harmony with the local community. We demonstrate this through achieving recognition with the Bali Tri Hita Karana Awards which promote a balanced relationship between fellow human beings, their God and the environment and through adopting the Green Globe 21 approach to sustainable tourism. We offer our guests the opportunity to participate in our GG 21 activities by constantly creating new Alila experiences in support of this policy while proactively encouraging local tourism operators in our regency to think Green especially in preserving the waterways, forests and temple environments and minimising their use of plastic.

To promote our community relationship we commit to select the majority of our employee’s from the local area and region of Gianyar regency. We utilise fresh local products and services from local suppliers with a preference to those from profit sharing co-operatives organisations and surrounding villages. It is our commitment to measure our greenhouse gas emissions, energy and fresh water usage, waste water discharges, minimize our solid waste and set targets etc., in all areas to improve our environmental performance through benchmarking with GG21 every year and to comply with the relevant environmental public and occupational health and safety, hygiene and employment legislation and other requirements of Indonesia to which we are obliged to adhere. Our Management and Green Team is proud to promote and communicate our aims and performance in the GG21 programs to our share holders and to all staff, neighbours, suppliers and local community and to make this policy available to them on request.

Water Management :

Fresh water will be a concern for some parts of Bali in the future if the tourism industry does not start caring. The main cause is water pollution. By treating the water on the site and using our lotus water garden, Alila Ubud ensures that there is no waste water escaping the properties. Additionally, this water garden creates another pond ecosystem which is home to a new community of animals such as dragonflies, lotus, and mosquitos. Checking the acidity level is regularly done to monitor the water quality. Furthermore, the grey water is also reused for gardening purposes. The community and the guests will be happy to know that all cleaning chemicals that we use in the hotels be it from the kitchen or the housekeeping departments are all biodegradable which means safe for the environment and the people.

Alila continuously looks for ways to reduce its energy consumption through progressive reviews and target setting. Below are our energy savings programmes currently implemented in the resort:

  • Air conditioning usage is reduced for vacant and arrival rooms during winter period.
  • Solar solutions to public security lighting will be offered in the future.
  • Use of water circulation pumps is reduced while keeping water healthy using natural fish and plant fauna.
  • Implementation of low wattage energy saving light globes.
  • Walking and cycling tours are promoted instead of driving tours with our guests to see the natural local environment.
  • New technologies and more efficient operating equipment are researched yearly in our replacement exercise.

Natural Environments :

  • The team at Alila Ubud realises the full flora and fauna potential of the area where the hotel is operating. That is the reason why we aim to preserve them by doing the following:
  • Offering binoculars and bird books at the boutique and library to encourage appreciation from our guests of the natural wild life in the area through walks and from their rooms.
  • We understand the local flora from this area and keep this species original without introducing new species which could endanger them.
  • Keeping the building to a minimum in relation to the natural vegetation so as to offer our guests green natural views from all rooms and public areas.
  • Using environmental friendly mosquito puffer device and reducing the frequency which is effective in keeping mosquitoes manageable yet not damaging our species.
  • Encouraging the original Balinese method of clearing and fertisilising the rice paddies by the use of ducks rather than chemical fertilisers with our neighbouring farmers.
