The Green Bank at Alila Manggis
In 2010 Alila Manggis spent many hours a week with the help of Kadek, our Environmental Consultant who worked twice a month with the team, engaging in many activities within the property to become more responsible in behaviour towards the environment and its sustainability: from water saving through better supervision, and garbage segregation in-house rather than through a third party, to composting green waste and isolating wood for firewood for the benefit of the traditional villagers who may still prefer to use it. Now that Alila Manggis can manage its own garbage and waste in an organised manner, we feel the urge to slowly and steadily spread this newfound knowledge to the adjoining village of Buitan. A programme has been developed to encourage the habitants of Buitan to 'invest' their time and effort in this bank to create a litter-free future. Plastic waste being disposed at random from households and the communities in general is a serious threat in Bali, one that can be countered only through interactive sessions of training and guidance along with the promise to manage their collected waste systematically and long term. It aims to motivate the community through learning and rewards for the little things that they may do to make a difference.
The Green Bank at Alila Manggis - OUR PROMISE
To manage the waste and ensure that it is disposed of effectively and correctly for proper re-cycling or re-use in the short, medium and long term.
The Green Bank at Alila Manggis – OUR LONG TERM GOAL
- To slowly and steadily introduce the importance of being aware of the environment and the little things that we can all do to contribute to its sustainability by keeping our promise to dispose of the waste being collected, appropriately. On many occasions, projects had begun but over time, the collection and disposal became erratic and eventually stopped, thus making the villagers helpless in their efforts to clean up their surroundings.
- Every fortnight to share one positive message with the participants with regards to the Environment, Personal Safety and Hygiene – this will be shared at the time of their visit to invest their litter and will be in the form of a learning card.
- A quarterly competition based on knowledge gained and contributions made will be held and some prizes offered to the better performers. We will aim to keep motivation up by rewarding all participants with token rewards from time to time.
- Once we are confident that this programme works in our village of Buitan, we will take it to the next village and to the one after. We are not in a hurry – a slow, steady and dedicated approach will ultimately make the difference and win the race.
