As part of its commitment to support the Bali Life Foundation, Alila Villas Uluwatu has taken on two of the foundation’s eldest children as trainees in its kitchen, 13-year-old Fitri Yolanda and 25-year-old Ni Wayan Pura. The Bali Life Foundation, located in Jimbaran, provides a safe, loving home for children who are orphaned, abandoned or whose parents are unable to care for them. In a family environment, with foster parents and other ‘brothers and sisters’, the children are given an education and the opportunity to train in skills that will give them the best chance for future employment supported by Bali’s vibrant tourism industry. The foundation is one of several nominated charities funded by Alila Villas Uluwatu, which apart from offering some of the best villas in Bali also strives to play a significant role in local community development. Alila’s in-house training programme, which covers cooking, hygiene and hospitality, will enable them to gain invaluable skills and experience required to ensure a good start within the industry. Fitri Yolanda and Ni Wayan Pura, who are known as Olan Puri, have already been introduced to some kitchen essentials including basic cutting techniques, hygiene and sanitation. Under the patient guidance of Demi Chef de Partie, Rai, and Chef de Partie, Heru, the girls have even learnt some simple recipes such as how to make ice cream, cookies, pancakes and garnishes out of vegetables. Puri is getting familiar with the English words for different herbs like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and bayleaf. Olan and Puri are both thrilled at the education at Alila Villas Uluwatu, and look forward to building their cooking repertoire and soon mastering dishes on their own.
